The Largest Sunspot in Over a Decade

The large sunspot group of October, 2014. This image was obtained just minutes before an X-3 X-ray flare erupted from this region on October 24, 2014.

Canon 7D digital camera, 500 mm f/4 L IS telephoto lens with 2x TC. Exposure 1/200 second, ISO 100, f/8 at 1000 mm. Plate scale of the original image = 0.89 arc-seconds / pixel. This image is is 1/2 scale, so 1.78 arc-seconds / pixel. The image is a combination of 2 original frames, blended together where the resolution was best in each image.
